| SBI Early Career Webinar Series
Studies have demonstrated that early career radiologists are most prone to the symptoms of burnout. This subset of radiologists faces unique challenges as they embark on their careers. We strive to provide a program that will strengthen the foundation for a successful career in breast imaging.
Through this webinar series, we provide early career breast imagers with better preparation and tools to effectively navigate the early career years and increase engagement in SBI—all of which are known to mitigate the burnout that is currently plaguing our physician workforce. Radiologists should also have increased understanding of non-medical curriculum such as financial literacy and legal literacy as it pertains to breast imagers.
This webinar series is a collection of three previously presented live webinars targeted to SBI’s early career radiologist members.
1. MQSA 101 and Breast Center Roles: Sona Chikarmane, MD, FSBI
Description: In residency and fellowship, we learn the fundamentals of breast cancer detection, the importance of performing safe and accurate breast interventions, and how to differentiate benign and malignant breast disease. However, formal teaching on the Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA), screening and diagnostic performance metrics, and the importance of a medical audit is not often discussed. Maintaining and passing audits are critical to the maintenance of a Breast Imaging Facility accreditation. You may be your breast facility’s next lead interpreting physician! What should you know? Join us for this webinar on “MQSA 101 and Breast Center Roles” to find out. We will review the basics of MQSA, review screening performance metrics including optimal screening callback rates and positive predictive values, and potential updates to the new BI-RADS manual.
2. Payment Models and Introduction to Financial Literacy: Geraldine B. McGinty, MD
Description: How does the work that we do as breast imagers translate into payment? This webinar will provide an overview of healthcare payment policy and the payer landscape. We'll discuss specific examples related to breast imaging as well as current payment challenges and initiatives.
3. Introduction to Legal Literacy: Michael N. Linver, MD, FSBI
Description: Radiologists are becoming more frequent targets in medical malpractice suits. For this reason, a discussion of the legal standards to which radiologists are held will be presented, along with ways to decrease their medicolegal exposure in today’s changing medical climate. Multiple actual case studies will be included in the presentation.

| SBI Webinar: Imaging Algorithms & Pathologies of the Breast During Pregnancy & Lactation
Screening for breast cancer and/or the management of breast symptoms and signs in patients who are pregnant, or lactating remain a challenge for radiologists and referring providers in routine practice. A delay in imaging of symptomatic patients can result in delayed cancer diagnosis while inappropriate imaging can lead to unnecessary imaging or biopsies. In addition, the current delay in age of pregnancy for many patients overlap with time of onset of many national screening recommendations, which results in confusion regarding screening options. This webinar will cover the most common benign and malignant pathologies encountered in patients who are pregnant or lactating and will address the most appropriate management recommendations based on the American College of Radiology (ACR) published Appropriateness Criteria for imaging the breast in pregnant or lactating women. The webinar will also address some of the clinical nuances for screening for breast cancer in this patient population, while highlighting the different risks and benefits of the various breast imaging tools.

| SBI Webinar: Navigating Imaging AI Bias
Bias in artificial intelligence (AI) is a complex, context-dependent topic. Understanding and identifying sources of bias in imaging AI can mitigate potential adverse impact on patients. Commercially available breast imaging AI solutions may propagate statistical bias inherent in model develop, such as selection bias, and demonstrate data shift, adversely impacting model performance without physician awareness. “Out-of-the-box” breast imaging models may not be generalizable to all patients and can perpetuate health disparities.
Understanding sources of imaging AI bias enables creation of specific strategies to mitigate its impact. Furthermore, awareness of imaging AI bias can translate to new and unfamiliar technologies, including natural language processing/large language models, equipping users to prospectively address potentially harmful sources of AI bias.
In this webinar, Dr. Ali Tejani provides a foundation for imaging AI bias in the context of breast imaging. He discusses context-dependent definitions of bias in imaging AI and enumerates common sources of bias, proposing specific strategies to detect imaging AI bias and mitigate its impact. Accordingly, this webinar will provide tools for attendees to assess the current state of AI initiatives at their own institution and develop strategies to address potential sources of bias. Additionally, this webinar provides actionable steps for attendees to actively participate in pre-deployment evaluation and continued monitoring of AI solutions.

| SBI Webinar: Male Breast Cancer Detection
Although uncommon, male breast cancer has a rising incidence worldwide and poses an important health problem for individual patients. Clinical detection leads to delay in diagnosis, as reflected in a persistent survival gap between men and women with breast cancer despite advances in modern therapy. While breast imaging recommendations for men with breast symptoms are well established, the role of imaging in screening in men is less well understood.
In this webinar, we will describe diagnostic challenges of male breast cancer, review appropriate management of common clinical scenarios, discuss the natural history of male breast cancer, consider evidence for targeted screening, and summarize current imaging guidelines.

| SBI Webinar: Hindsight - What We Can Learn from Missed Breast Cancers
Breast imaging radiologists play a central and critical role in the early detection of breast cancer. Complex perceptual and cognitive tasks are required to accurately evaluate screening and diagnostic imaging as well as effectively perform image guided procedures. Additionally, a combination of patient-related, tumor-related, and technical factors can introduce challenges impacting cancer detection.
Review of missed breast cancers and understanding various contributing factors can be beneficial in improving radiologist performance and patient outcomes. In fact, to satisfy practice quality and safety requirements, the American College of Radiology is encouraging practices to adopt a collaborative peer learning process where radiologists share and learn from their errors both individually and in group conference formats.
In this webinar, Dr. Michael Taylor-Cho shares cases of missed breast cancers. He discusses the various factors that contributed to the missed breast cancer with particular emphasis on the various perceptual and cognitive errors that breast imaging radiologists commonly fall victim to. This webinar will enable attendees to identify and recognize the factors that contribute to missed breast cancers and come up with strategies to prevent similar errors in the future. Additionally, the webinar provides tools that can be employed in the attendees’ own institutional peer review learning process.

| The Society of Breast Imaging is thrilled to launch a webinar series on mammography positioning. This series will not only revisit the “how to” of mammography positioning (as featured in the 1999 ACR Quality Control Manual) but will also introduce updated positioning techniques that are required for changes in digital imaging modalities. The lectures address the need for and importance of standardized positioning techniques, which are used in all radiography examinations except mammography. Understanding correlation anatomy is the basis for all imaging, particularly the breast. Once technologists understand the relationship between the how and why of breast positioning and the importance of consistency and reproducibility, we will see not only an improvement in image quality but also a reduction in repeats, rejects, and technical callbacks. Each webinar is one hour long and includes a posttest. This series is presented by SBI Honorary Fellow Louise Miller, RT(R)(M) (see bio below).

In addition to expert interpretive and technical skills, breast imaging radiologists must develop proficiency in communicating with patients who face the challenges of receiving a breast biopsy recommendations, undergoing biopsies and receiving breast cancer diagnoses. In these settings, patient-centered communications require an understanding of patient needs, goals and preferences; they also require skillful engagement in collaborative, informative and supportive discussions.
While breast imaging has been the radiology leader in a patient-centered approach to care, there is a paucity of formal training in patient communications, leaving gaps for those already in practice and a need for specific strategies for current trainees. In the first of a two-part series, moderator Dr. Mary Scott Soo, along with Dr. Stamatia Destounis, will describe ways to improve awareness of patient experiences and perspectives in breast imaging, to set the stage for effective patient centered communications. This webinar will also enable attendees to recognize strategies for effective communications during biopsy recommendations and procedures, and provide tools for preparing patients for potential breast cancer diagnoses in these settings.
