Approximately 40% of women over 40 years of age have dense breasts (1). Dense tissue reduces the effectiveness of mammography and increases the risk of developing breast cancer. Women with dense breasts are at increased risk for higher stage interval cancers (2). By adding supplemental screening to mammography, we should detect breast cancer earlier than would otherwise be detected clinically as a palpable mass. In this presentation, we will discuss supplemental screening for breast cancer detection, including tomosynthesis, ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging, molecular breast imaging, and contrast mammography. References: 1.
