Course Objectives
  • Review strategies in screening interpretation and lesion analysis to reduce false positive recalls for asymmetries, masses, and calcifications.
  • Identify interpretation strategies in screening mammography to increase cancer detection rate
  • Apply the 6 elements of the SPIKES protocol to empathetically discuss radiology and pathology results with a focus on malignant pathology.
  • To understand possible ways to reduce the impact of higher patient volumes, longer work-days and radiologist shortage with additional support staff and functional technology.
  • Describe the forthcoming changes to the audit section of the BI-RADS atlas.
  • Appropriately categorize histology into positive and negative results for the purposes of the audit.
Case Based Challenges: Raise your CDR and Lower your RR

Session Description:Despite advances in new imaging modalities mammography is the mainstay of population based breast cancer screening. High quality screening programs strive for high cancer detection rates (CDR) while maintaining low false positive recall rates. This session will use a case-based approach to review strategies to increase CDR and reduce false positive screening recalls.

Learning Objectives:

  • Upon completion of this lecture, participants will be able to apply several interpretation strategies in screening mammography to increase cancer detection rate.
  • Upon completion of this lecture, participants will be able to apply strategies in screening interpretation and lesion analysis to reduce false positive recalls for asymmetries, masses, and calcifications.
  • Upon completion of this lecture participants will be able to describe common pitfalls in the interpretation of screening mammography.

Volume Issues: Balancing Quantity, Quality and Safety

Session Description: How do we manage ourselves and our practices, giving optimal care to our patients while juggling increasing case numbers and demands on our time? In this session, we will discuss workload and practice expectations across a spectrum of environments, including both academic and private settings. The presenters have experience as Department Chair, Division and/or Section Chief, and Practice Leader while also contributing to teaching, radiology service work, and publications.

Learning Objectives:

  • To understand the variability of practices across a sample from the U.S. and how this informed SBI and ACR recommendations to SCARD for breast imaging academic practice evaluation.
  • To understand the changes in AARAD benchmarks over time and how to navigate balancing expectations in different practice settings.
  • To understand possible ways to reduce the impact of higher patient volumes, longer work-days and radiologist shortage with additional support staff and functional technology.

Language Matters: Communicating Results

Session Description: This education session will provide data-driven pearls for delivering results to patients, including in-person and telephone communication, optimizing radiologist-patient communication techniques, and managing patient responses. Patient communication may not be explicitly addressed in school or training, but it can be learned.

Learning Objectives:

  • Upon completion, participants will be able to utilize the 6 elements of the SPIKES protocol to empathetically discuss radiology and pathology results with a focus on malignant pathology.
  • Upon completion, participants will be able to distinguish the nuances of differing settings for delivery of imaging and pathology results by radiologists.
  • Upon completion, participants will be able to constructively recognize and address patient responses in order to facilitate care with other members of the breast care delivery team.

BI-RADS Audit and Outcomes

Session Description: This session will provide attendees with a preview of the forthcoming changes to the Audit and Outcomes Monitoring section of the revised BI-RADS atlas.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the forthcoming changes to the audit section of the BI-RADS atlas.
  • Appropriately categorize histology into positive and negative results for the purposes of the audit.
  • Distinguish between screening and diagnostic positive and negative exams for the purposes of the audit.
