SBI Symposium Collection: Clinical Controversies

The Clinical Controversies Symposium Collection is designed to enhance a learner's competence in discussing benefits and possible harms of screening mammography as well as personalized screening approaches. Learners will also understand breast imaging challenges created by the Covid-19 pandemic and the implementation of the 21st Century Cures Act. This collection features presentations from the 2022 SBI Symposium.

Session Description: This session will review effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on Breast Imaging facilities, personnel and trainee education. A major point will be institutional wellness programs have a major effect on personnel.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe COVID-19 pandemic effects on breast imaging facilities, personnel and trainee education.
  2. Analyze which breast imaging personnel populations were most impacted by the pandemic.
  3. Recognize factors leading to personnel distress.

Making the Case for Screening at Your Institution - A Mock Debate

Session Description: A friendly debate among colleagues between a make-believe primary care physician and a breast radiologist. They will discuss the benefits of screening and lifesaving exams to reduce breast cancer deaths and reduce morbidity from advanced breast cancer and also the well-publicized presumed risks of screening such as false positive call backs, overdiagnosis, anxiety, radiation risk, health care costs.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand the evidence-based benefits of mammographic screening.
  2. Review the much-publicized criticisms and harms of screening.
  3. Demonstrate talking points to debate the benefits versus risks of screening and influence the radiologist's ability to advocate effectively for screening.

Personalized Screening: Pros and Cons (Or Where Do We Stand?)

Session Description: Drs. Burnside and Rebner will discuss the benefits and disadvantages of breast cancer screening using a personalized approach. The presentation will be evidence-based and relevant to current practices and guidelines.

  1. Understand the evidence base that exists for personalized breast cancer screening.
  2. Realize what information/evidence is missing to be confident in the impact/outcomes of personalized breast cancer screening.
  3. Appreciate the pros and cons for personalized breast cancer screening based on existing technology and current health care delivery in the US.
  4. Identify some of the key components for the implementation of personalized breast cancer screening.

Patient-Centered Radiology: The 21st Century CURES Act

Session Description: The radiologist’s ability to understand patients’ perceptions and perspectives during their imaging experience is critical for effective patient care and patient satisfaction. This session will describe the basic tenets of patient-centered radiology holistically, the impact of the 21st Century CURES Act, then focus on the particular patient communication challenges in breast imaging.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe the concepts of patient-centered radiology and why they are important.
  2. Discuss the impact of the 21st Century CURES Act in radiology and breast imaging.
  3. Describe patients’ perspectives of breast imaging experiences, with a focus on radiologist-patient communication about abnormal results, based on the CURES Act.
