SBI Symposium Collection: Ultrasound

The Symposium Ultrasound collection is designed to enhance a learner’s competence related to screening breast ultrasound within a radiology practice. The learner will understand the benefits of ultrasound for detecting mammographically occult cancers, how to establish a screening breast ultrasound program, and the key steps needed for successful implementation. This collection features presentations from the 2018, 2019, and 2021 SBI Symposia.

Screening Ultrasound – How to Take the Plunge and Implement in Your Practice

Session Description: This session will focus on screening breast ultrasound, with an emphasis on establishing a screening sonography program. The session will cover practical considerations, including who will scan, who will be scanned, and where the patients will come from.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Critique the strengths and weaknesses of screening breast ultrasound.
  2. Establish a screening breast ultrasound program.
  3. Determine who will be scanning and who will be scanned.
Speaker Information
Catherine Giess MD, FSBI
Nuts and Bolts: Screening US and ABUS Implementation

Session Description: Attendees will learn strategies for successful implementation and interpretation of supplemental screening with HHUS and ABUS for women with dense breasts. Goals include understanding how workflow accommodations, technologist and physician training, optimization of image quality, and interpretation strategies become essential in attaining a successful supplemental screening program. A case-based ultrasound review will enhance the session by demonstrating the impact of additional screening on patient care.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand the benefits of adding whole breast ultrasound screening to clinical practice to enhance cancer detection in the setting of dense breast tissue featuring case-based review.
  2. Obtain strategies for successful implementation and interpretation that include workflow design, training, and optimizing image quality for successful performance.
  3. Understand the benefits of the coronal view on ABUS examination to distinguish benign from malignant disease.

Breast Ultrasound After Mammo, Tomo, and MRI - Getting It Right and Avoiding the Wrong

Session Description: This session will focus on the role of ultrasound following mammography, tomosynthesis, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The session will emphasize ultrasound correlating with the preceding modality (mammography, tomosynthesis, or MRI).

Learning Objectives:

  1. Appreciate the role of ultrasound following mammography, tomosynthesis, and MRI.
  2. Understand the concepts of mammographic-sonographic concordance and MRI-sonographic concordance.
  3. Appreciate the role of ultrasound in providing guidance for biopsy of lesions seen on mammography, tomosynthesis, and/or MRI.

US Biopsy: How to Optimize?

Session Description: A successful imaging guided biopsy starts at matching the appropriate biopsy technique to the lesion in question and finishes with appropriate post-biopsy follow-up. This session centers on ultrasound guided biopsy and will include discussion and actual case examples of preparing for the biopsy, using and choosing a biopsy device, accurately targeting a lesion, and providing post-biopsy care.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Recognize the optimal image guided method for given types of breast lesions and operator skill set with emphasis on ultrasound guidance.
  2. Plan an appropriate use of biopsy device and approach to target a lesion.
  3. Describe methods to prevent or mitigate problems arising from ultrasound guided procedures.
